Live-Weight Pricing vs. Fixed Per-Animal Pricing

Cattle are commonly sold using one of two models: live-weight pricing or a fixed per-animal rate. Neither method is automatically better in every situation.

Live-Weight Pricing vs. Fixed Per-Animal Pricing

Cattle are commonly sold using one of two models: live-weight pricing or a fixed per-animal rate. Neither method is automatically better in every situation.

The right option depends on the available cattle, the buyer’s priorities and the transparency of the transaction.

How Live-Weight Pricing Works

Under this model, the animal’s agreed live weight is multiplied by the agreed price per kilogram.

Live weight × agreed PKR per kilogram = animal price

For example, if the verified live weight is 500 kilograms and the agreed rate is PKR X per kilogram, the price is:

500 × PKR X

The buyer should confirm:

  • The applicable rate per kilogram.
  • When and where weighing will take place.
  • Which weighing device will be used.
  • The identity of the animal being weighed.
  • When payment and collection are due.

Live weight refers to the weight of the living animal. It is not a promise of carcass weight or boneless meat yield.

How Fixed Per-Animal Pricing Works

In a fixed-price sale, the buyer and seller agree on a total price for a specific animal.

The price may reflect breed, size, condition, physical characteristics, market demand and overall finish. The main advantage is simplicity: once the price is agreed, the buyer knows the amount payable for that animal.

Which Model Suits Commercial Buyers?

Bulk buyers often use live weight as an important procurement measure. However, some groups may be offered at a herd-based or per-head fixed rate.

Commercial buyers should consider the complete batch rather than price alone, including uniformity, condition, collection timing and suitability for their operation.

Which Model Suits Individual Buyers?

Individual and Qurbani buyers may appreciate the simplicity of a fixed price. Others prefer live-weight pricing because the calculation is visible.

The important point is to understand the applicable model before paying a deposit.

At Shajra Livestock, pricing may be based on live weight or a fixed per-animal rate, depending on the selected herd or animal.
