A Commercial Buyer’s Guide to Procuring Cattle in Batches

For slaughterhouses, processors and distributors, buying cattle is a procurement decision—not simply a negotiation over headcount.

A Commercial Buyer’s Guide to Procuring Cattle in Batches

For slaughterhouses, processors and distributors, buying cattle is a procurement decision—not simply a negotiation over headcount.

A suitable batch must align with the buyer’s weight requirements, processing objectives, collection capacity and budget.

Define the Requirement First

Before contacting a farm, prepare a clear specification covering:

  • Required number of animals.
  • Preferred breed or acceptable breed mix.
  • Target live-weight range.
  • Acceptable variation within the batch.
  • Preferred pricing method.
  • Inspection date.
  • Collection window.
  • Vehicle capacity.

A vague request for “heavy cattle” is difficult to fulfil consistently. A defined range gives both parties a better basis for discussion.

Consider Batch Uniformity

Cattle with broadly comparable size and finish can simplify commercial assessment and production planning.

Perfect uniformity is not realistic in live animals, but thoughtful grouping can reduce avoidable variation. Buyers should agree on the acceptable range rather than assuming every animal will be identical.

Evaluate More Than Weight

Live weight is useful, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed meat yield.

Body condition, frame, gut fill, age and processing practices can affect eventual carcass results. Experienced commercial buyers therefore combine weighing with physical inspection and their own procurement standards.

Confirm the Commercial Terms

Before making payment, document:

  • Animal or batch identification.
  • Number of cattle.
  • Agreed rate or fixed price.
  • Weighing arrangements.
  • Deposit requirement.
  • Balance-payment deadline.
  • Collection deadline.
  • Responsibility for transport.

Clear terms protect both buyer and seller.

Plan Transport Early

At Shajra Livestock, all cattle are sold on a farm-collection basis. Buyers must arrange and pay for suitable transport from Toba Tek Singh.

Confirm vehicle access and collection timing before dispatch. The livestock vehicle should be suitable for the number and size of animals being collected.

For selected cattle, a non-refundable deposit of PKR 10,000 per head secures a 24-hour hold.

Visit the farm before you commit.

Tell us what you need and we will confirm current availability, the applicable pricing model and a visiting time. Saturday–Thursday, 10:00 AM–5:00 PM. Closed Friday.
